Mount Lewis, NV Air Route Surveillance Radar Improvements

Years Active: 2024

Client: Urban Electric

Services Provided: Concrete coring and compression testing

During July 2024, Thurston Laboratories was contracted to conduct concrete coring at Mt. Lewis in Lander County, NV. The scope of work included recovering a core sample from an existing concrete equipment pad inside the FAA's Long Range Air Route Surveillance Radar station to ensure structural stability for upgraded equipment.

The remote location and tight work space provided a challenge for this project, but coring was completed successfully, and the specimen was returned to our Elko laboratory for further processing in accordance with ASTM C42. It was capped with high strength cement paste and tested for compressive strength. The client was happy with Thurston Laboratories' handling of the job and happier still that the existing structure was shown to be structurally suitable for the upgraded equipment to be placed.

A hole remains after the removal of a core sample. The hole is patched after the water from coring has dried.

The small confines and limited access of the equipment room proved challenging, though the project was completed without incident.
Long Range ARSR housed in an elevated dome above the job site.
